Archiving for the Future

Have you visited Taragaon Museum’s permanent exhibition: “Archiving for the Future.” We are delighted as we embark on a captivating journey that explores the intersection of time, architecture, and archives, all through the lens of memory and people. This exhibition shines a light on the crucial role of archiving in preserving and promoting our shared heritage for generations to come.
At the heart of this exhibition lies the Nepal Architecture Archive (NAA). This ever-growing and versatile archive is a treasure trove of rare photographs, books, surveys, blueprints, objects, and invaluable notes. It offers unique insights into Nepal’s rapidly evolving urban landscapes and cultural nuances. Over the years, the archive has been enriched by the dedicated work of international and local scholars and artists, who have documented and contributed to its vast collection. Today, we honor their efforts as we explore the histories of architectural elements and materials that shape our understanding of Nepal’s architectural heritage.
To facilitate a refreshed vision of the Nepal Architecture Archive, the curatorial team envisioned a broad overview of four primary themes across three galleries: People and Places, Vernacular Architecture, Architectural Surveys, and Monuments. The maps, photographs, objects, and ephemera that articulate these four themes are either originals or reprints of materials from the archive by scholars, researchers, and contributors who have spent years and some decades documenting the lives and landscapes of people and places they encountered. Each gallery offers various access points for visitors to the archive with their own stories and histories.
We would also like to announce a free guided tour every Monday, 3pm.

‘Collective Expressions’ by Pagoda Group

‘Collective Expressions’ by Pagoda Group
Pagoda Group is a dynamic five-member collective featuring Roshan Pradhan, Kishor Nakarmi, Pradhumna Shrestha, Mala Shrestha, and Rudra Bahadur Pun.
The group’s present exhibition titled ‘Collective Expressions’ is a reaffirmation of their commitment to highlighting Nepal’s heritage, while also serving as a medium to draw attention to the fact that our precious heritage – the very myths, and traditions that have shaped our very cultural identity through the millennia are threatened by urban pressure, haphazard planning and apathy.
The artists in this collective also draw us to another scenario – one where the human species faces myriad dilemmas with the rise of robotics and advanced technology. Each artist in this
collective, addresses these concerns, with the power of their narrative and unique style.
‘Collective Expressions’ will continue till the 17th of February 2023.

SOUNDLESSNESS – Bình Nhi

Artist’s Statement
SOUNDLESSNESS / Bình Nhi
26th August to 28th August
My stay in Nepal lasted longer than I initially thought. Art always teaches us to explore, passion, and pursue to the end no matter where we are.
My first wish upon coming to the land of Buddha was to study more about Buddha, Mandala, and Thangka paintings at Tsering Art School in Shechen monastery. After almost three months of experiencing many places, I feel as if the colors, people, and scenery of this place harmonize with me as one.
Thus, my drawings came to me naturally without any hesitation—over 20 paintings on rice paper. The idea of saving beautiful memories through a personal exhibition made sense to me and I started composing more outside of class.
The 3 days of my exhibition are neither more nor less. For me, they are perfect.
There are over 35 paintings carefully placed over two floors—the 1st floor shows 10 paintings of lotuses and insects that are knitted with religious colors. These works are perhaps the old self immersing in new colors without losing itself.
On the 2nd floor, I have displayed, landscapes, people, and places I experienced in Nepal. All the paintings are painted in abstract language.
The religious colors of Nepal attract me and I have expressed it in lines, texture, and colors. When it comes to art, I don’t intend to draw to imply or describe what I want to say, but rather I like to touch and feel.
Every path I go through carries the sound of mantras and Buddhist verses. It’s the sound of liberation, the sound of freedom and peace that I feel. It cannot be expressed in words.
“Silence” is perhaps the state when the self finds a release, it is surprisingly not without sound, and it is not voiceless. It’s like falling into the stillness of the mind!
To experience all of those was not an easy path but to achieve genuine happiness within me is my greatest wish.
I hope my personal experiences in this foreign land—as a form of art— will bring the sound of joy to all.

QUICK TIME, OLD RIVER, AND A SKY FULL OF DREAMS

Nepal Picture Library is thrilled to announce the opening of
QUICK TIME, OLD RIVER, AND A SKY FULL OF DREAMS at Patan House
29 June – 30 September
Patan House, Dhaugal
Kathmandu valley is experiencing unprecedented change. Is time somehow speeding past quicker than it used to? What do we remember of the old ways of life? How can this memory transform into knowledge which takes us past simple nostalgia? How can this knowledge show us tenable ways to serve the needs and dreams of the millions who share the Kathmandu sky? How can plans and policies look beyond technocratic solutions to embrace a healthier politics of the commons?
This exhibition, with its accompanying public program, attempts to address these and related themes that thread together the outcomes produced by the seven research fellows of the Kathmandu Valley Urban History Project.
The Kathmandu Valley Urban History Project is a research and public knowledge initiative that works towards understanding, documenting, and telling stories about the ways that Kathmandu is experiencing change. Through place-based research, archiving, and storytelling, the project seeks to contribute to the public discourse on urbanization, the commons, and imaginations for the future.

MITHILA COSMOS: THE CYCLES OF LIFE by SC SUMAN

READING THE WORLD THROUGH THE MITHILA LENS

SC Suman’s ‘Mithila Cosmos: The Cycles Of Time’ peers into the contemporary world with help from the Mithila genre and Hindu mythology

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.

Call for participation in a short film making competition on ‘Gender Equality’

Background: Gender has been a cross cutting issue for the European Union in all of its development cooperation interventions globally and in Nepal. While there has been some uneven progress in addressing girls’ and women’s rights, not a single country, around the world, is on track to empower girls and achieve gender equality by 2030. To make matters worse the COVID situation around the world has been affecting the girls and women the most. This is because a large number of them work in the informal sector. Gender violence is reportedly on the rise after the onslaught of the COVID pandemic in Nepal and there is a glaring need to raise awareness against gender violence and at the same time show solidarity with the ongoing movement to advocate and establish gender rights at all levels of the Nepali society.

Nepal America International Film Festival 2021 Announced

MARYLAND — Nepal America Film Society has announced the fourth edition of its Nepal America International Film Festival to be organized from 18 to 20th of June 2021. Submission for films from around the world is now open for this Washington DC area based international film festival.

The festival showcases all genres of films including feature lengths, documentaries, animations, experimental and shorts from Nepal, South Asia, USA, and all around the world. As in previous years, films from the Global Peace Film Festival Florida will be screened in the Special Sidebar Section. Films from Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia will be featured in the special DMV Close-up Section.

In 2020, the festival could not be held because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Nepal America Film Society joined hands with 7 other South Asian film festivals in North America to organize Coalition of South Asian Film Festivals (CoSAFF) in October.

2021’s edition of the festival will also feature industry panels, critical conversations with filmmakers and other events, which will be announced in coming months.

NAIFF is an annual film event organized by Nepal America Film Society Inc, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization based in Prince George’s County. Every year, it brings together more than three thousand film enthusiasts from Maryland and the greater Washington DC region including filmmakers, volunteers, community leaders, film and community organizations and businesses.

NAIFF aims to bring together people from diverse cultures through the art of cinema. Since 2017 the Film Festival has built a unique reputation as an emerging platform for filmmakers with Nepali background along with American filmmakers and filmmakers from the international diaspora.
