Phortse. Home to more Everest summiteers than anywhere else on earth.

Beyond Auto Mode Photography Workshop – February 2020

Do you use your camera’s automatic mode to take pictures? This means you have given up control of your photography. Although you push the shutter button to actually take the image but that just makes you a button-pusher, not an active participant in the process. Photography, in its purest form, is a mix of art and science. Each of us can be “photographer” by taking control of our cameras and making images with intention.

Do you ever look at your photos and wonder why they are so dark or so light? Do you wonder why some images are blurry, but images made two frames later are not? Do you look at your images and wish you could do better?

Anyone can make an incredible picture. You just have to get beyond ‘auto mode’ and start making pictures.

Baidam, walking through silence screen print exhibition

“Once upon a time Pokhara was a mellow, sleepy town.
Lakeside then was called ‘Baidam’. It was the only place in Nepal where even buffaloes speak English’, according to locals. Continental breakfast with fresh coffee and (magic) mushroom omelets was served in small, tattered huts. Now life around lakeside has transformed so much that it is rare to see a buffalo lazing about. The name ‘Baidam’ has been long forgotten.”Bikalpa Art Center is pleased to present the 2nd solo exhibition of Mr. Prabod Shrestha. The exhibition will feature 21 pieces of screen print works with juxtaposition of his poetry. Mr. Shrestha’s work shows the reflection of minimalism, meditativeness, and intuition. The source of inspiration is the characteristic of Lakeside Pokhara (Baidam) and the deep connection with the nature and simplicity around.

Thinking Queer Archives, Art Practice and Activism

Where is our place? Where do we belong? Can the archive be a site where we can discover and name ourselves? Can it be a site where we build solidarities? Can the excavation of queer experience, queer desires and queer traumas allow us to re-examine our inherited past knowledge and imagine new futures?
photo.circle is pleased to invite you to this one-day discussion seminar to collectively think about and discuss queer archives, art practice and activism through conversations on how, as curators, researchers, archivists, educators and activists, we can remember, recognize, and witness queer lives across South Asia.

365, not just a number : Showcasing of Illustrations

ARTIST STATEMENT
“Four years back I was diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder. it was a mixture of mental health issues with some defining features being anxiety, depression, heightened negative thoughts and extreme mood fluctuations, self-harm tendencies, and some other issues. It was hard to share with others about it at first and to remain true to myself was a challenge.
I was hurting my loved ones along with myself so I decided to take help from professional and started taking therapy. Alongside therapy, I was asked to make a journal of my day and thought process. Around that time, I started creating an artwork per day as a method of release, journaling, and meditation. this helped me bring my focus back to creating than self-harm. This way I could process the thoughts to a more productive and expressive medium. Thus I created 365 artworks with an intention to find joy in life.

Mental health is a delicate and complicated issue that needs to be addressed and talked about within and in wider circles of our community. When one is faced with such a hurdle it is essential to share, communicate and seek help with family, friends, and professionals.

Starting from June 7 for 28 days symbolizing my age I intend to create and talk about mental health, the journey, the process, and key elements that were essential about maintaining my mental health. I will be airing it live for the time I sit down to create the artwork through Instagram, Facebook, and on the site and will be conversing, answering, sharing with the viewers.”

Beyond Auto Mode Photography Workshop – May 2019

Do you use your camera’s automatic mode to take pictures? This means you have given up control of your photography. Although you push the shutter button to actually take the image but that just makes you a button-pusher, not an active participant in the process. Photography, in its purest form, is a mix of art and science. Each of us can be “photographer” by taking control of our cameras and making images with intention.

Do you ever look at your photos and wonder why they are so dark or so light? Do you wonder why some images are blurry, but images made two frames later are not? Do you look at your images and wish you could do better?

Anyone can make an incredible picture. You just have to get beyond ‘auto mode’ and start making pictures.

photo.circle in collaboration with the British Council is happy to launch a photo exhibition titled Our Songs from the Forest by photographer Uma Bista on 15th March 2019 at Chhaya Center, Thamel.

Our Songs from the Forest is a tender solicitation by photographer Uma Bista into the hills of Achham, where we meet a chorus of young women coming of age in a fast-changing society. These young women are learning how to navigate severely oppressive cultural practices alongside new aspirations of equality. Little by little, they are beginning to ask questions and push boundaries.

Without a doubt, life in Achham is not easy, and the patriarchy unabashedly cruel. Women are considered impure while they menstruate, and are banished to a rudimentary shed, the infamous chhau-goth, for 7 whole days of every month. For 7 days of every month, women are deemed untouchable.

It is believed that the gods are angered if women break the rules of chhaupadi: deuta risauchan. The women are then held responsible for all possible ills that might befall the family, especially the menfolk, including accidents, illnesses, deaths, poor harvests, failures in school exams: anything that may bring hardship, sorrow or shame to the family.

Despite new laws that criminalize these practices, fear runs deep: fear of angering the gods, fear of being labeled immoral, fear of being ostracized by the community, fear of change.

Can such fears be replaced by the fear of legal consequences? Will destroying the chhau-goth free us of the traditions associated with it? How to push for freedom from the everyday chhaupadi?

Uma Bista takes us into the forests around Oligaun, where our young friends seek freedom from the daily oppression. In the forest, the skies are open. In the forest, they feel no fear. In the forest, they sing and laugh as loudly as they wish.

May their fearless songs forever resonate louder.

Beyond Auto Mode Photography Workshop – April 2019

DEAR ALL,

FUZZSCAPE : A Multimedia Exhibition

Fuzzscape is a multimedia documentary project, in which a group of creative professionals travel to different areas of Nepal—exploring and learning of communities and cultures—and create work that responds to their experiences of the spaces. During the process, the music artists in the team collaborate with musicians of the visited sites to create new music inspired by traditional and culturally significant music and or by the space itself. The filmmakers and writers in the team, in turn, document and reflect on the music-making process. Till date, the team has journeyed to Kavre, Sermanthang, Birgunj, Bhojpur, Janakpur and Manang and what has come out of the travels is a series of short documentaries that talk about the community, culture and the arts of the different areas. Sensing the need to document Nepali culture and heritage, from this year on, additional text, audio and video recorded during the trips are being compiled in the project’s website as archived material. The team has also been facilitating workshops—to discuss the condition of and issues surrounding intangible cultural heritage—for youth residing in the visited sites so that they too get inspired to take responsibility and contribute towards conservation. The exhibition will showcase the archives and documentary from Bhojpur, Janakpur and Manang.

Curated by Prasiit Sthapit and Rajan Shrestha.

Photokipa 2012

Photography has been one of the most aspiring professions in Nepal, people of all age shapes and sizes are doing it for fun, and profession. The market for photography has been increasing but the fact remains stagnant as the increase in the market of photography has not helped the stakeholders of Nepal boom in the manner it should.

It is high time that the stakeholders take an initiative to market the market of photography in the country and make the people understand and take the market seriously. Understanding the issue, Creative D. in association with Kathmandu Photographer’s Association organized an event Photokipa 2012 to summon the entire photography and imaging industry under one roof. It was a digital imaging fair which brought together the industry, trade, professional / amateur users and end consumers with a passion for photography and create a market, a market for people to understand and upgrade.

Photokipa was held at Bhrikutimandap Exhibition hall, from 13th – 15th April 2012, spanning across 35000 sq m. of floor area with the strong support of 100 exhibitors from both international and domestic markets. With visitors all over the country Photokipa expects 100 thousand people as photo & video traders, amateur photographers, photo studio owners, professional photographers, film industry professionals, technicians, photo wholesalers, lab owners and videographers, media people, and people interested in photography.
